Loblolly Pine

Loblolly Pine is associated with warm southeastern united states, commonly on moist upland soils. Usually three long needles per bundle; cones have stout prickles. Fast growth and large mature stature; not a small-yard screen. Choose stock and planting space for the species rather than using a generic pine irrigation or pruning prescription.

Pinus taeda · Southeastern evergreen pine

Profile

Habitat
Warm southeastern United States, commonly on moist upland soils
Identification
Usually three long needles per bundle; cones have stout prickles
Siting
Fast growth and large mature stature; not a small-yard screen
Light
Full sun; protect the future root zone from compaction and grade changes.

Water & soil targets

Moisture (VWC)
Site-calibrated; varies by soil and rootstock
Salinity tolerance
Prefer low-salinity irrigation; salt spray and deicing runoff can burn needles and impair roots.
Drought tolerance
Moderate; prolonged drought increases beetle risk

Optimal root measurement depth

8–18 in

Most absorbing tree roots live in the upper 12–18 inches, out toward the drip line. Typical guidance; confirm with a soil probe on site.

Provide reliable establishment moisture; tolerate seasonal moisture only where drainage and provenance suit the site, not permanent stagnant saturation. Check moisture below the mulch and across the expanding root zone before rewatering.

Problems to watch

  • Southern pine beetle
  • Fusiform rust
  • Root disease

Stress signs

  • Abnormal browning of current foliage or branch tips
  • Reduced candle extension and a thinning crown
  • Premature needle shedding beyond normal older-needle turnover

Where you'll find it

  • Timber production
  • Large-scale screening
