Each sensor reports soil moisture, soil temperature, and salinity from the root zone, along with signal and battery health. Readings are taken roughly every ten minutes and sent over the cellular network.

Do I need a gateway, repeater, or Wi-Fi?

Accepted Answer

No. Every sensor communicates over LTE Cat-1 cellular on its own. There is no base station to place, no mesh to plan, no mesh radios, and no property Wi-Fi to extend. Nothing touches your network, so there is no IT project and no firewall change.

Which carrier do the sensors use?

Accepted Answer

All of them, effectively. Each sensor carries a redundant global eSIM engineered with KORE that roams across tier-1 carriers — AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Telstra and others — and fails over automatically to whichever network is strongest at that location. You never buy, manage, or swap a SIM.

Does GroundWorx work outside the United States?

Yes. The same sensor works out of the box in more than 180 countries with no local SIM sourcing or hardware variant. For large farmland and rural topography, iQ SmartTowers ship on LTE Cat-1 with an elevation extension for long-range reach. Direct satellite NTN fallback is in development and is not shipping today.

Can GroundWorx data flow into the systems we already use?

Yes, in both directions. An open REST API with webhooks connects GAIN to central irrigation control (Toro Lynx, Rain Bird Cirrus and Nimbus, Hunter and others), weather stations, agronomy software, GIS mapping, and enterprise data lakes. No walled gardens — the data is yours and you can stream it anywhere.

A typical location takes about ten to fifteen minutes: cut a plug, set the sensor at the specified depth, and replace the plug. Most properties are fully installed in a day.

Sandy soil can dry rapidly while another soil holds water far longer, and sun, shade, roots, irrigation, and tomorrow's weather all change what a reading means. As GroundWorx samples a location again and again, it learns that location's environmental signature — how quickly it gains or loses moisture, how it responds to irrigation and rainfall, how temperature moves the root zone, and which patterns tend to appear before visible stress. Over time the location moves from simply being measured to becoming predictive.
